This past Thursday our playgroup spent the afternoon at a Natural Reserve only about 10 minutes from home called the Heckrodt Wetlands. We didn't have a huge turnout, most people had no idea what this place was, but it was really fun. I had a feeling that no one would come, so I called Mindi Ogden in the morning and told her that I would pick her up from home to make sure that I at least had some company... My boys absolutely love Jefferson, her son standing next to Ryan. He is 5 and actually goes to Ben's school, he is the only one in the ward that goes to Janssen Elementary. They have a nice little game where the entire time they are together the three of them call each other names, real cute huh? Oh well, they love it. Anyway, the wetlands were really neat to see, there was a nice boardwalk to stroll on and the tree cover was beautiful. The one problem that neither of us thought of was the over abundance of mosquitoes in a wetland area. We were pretty much eaten alive, but it was worth it. We spent some time eating our picnic lunches and then spent another hour strolling through the woods. At the end we went inside the Nature Center and spent another hour. They had turtles and frogs in huge aquariums, as well as displays of monarch butterflies transforming from caterpillars. While we were in the building we were met by another mom in our playgroup, so it wasn't as dismal of an outing as I first thought. There is even a special room in the back of the center filled with toys and books for the kids to play with. It was a great time and I'm glad that I can get to know other fellow moms as well as see more of what this new area offers. We'll definately have to make another trip to the wetlands in the future.
